You can include three types of ads for viewing on mobile devices: standard display ads, rich media display ads, and video ads.
For HTML5-based and rich media display ads, Mobile Rich Media Ad Interface Definition (MRAID) specifies a standardized set of commands to work with HTML5 and JavaScript. These commands determine what those mobile ads do (for example, expand or resize) when served in-app or in mobile web placements. For MRAID specifications, please see Mobile Rich Media Ad Interface Defintions (MRAID).
You must use MRAID commands for mobile in-app banners. You can use MRAID commands for mobile web placements. In-app or mobile web banners must:
-
Include
<script src="mraid.js"> </script>
. -
Don't use the Adform DHTML library.
-
Use click tag variables for HTML5 clicks and links rather than pre-defined URLs.
-
Implement events (if applicable).
-
Keep the banner file size as small as possible. (Visitors using mobile devices often use cell data plans with their cellular networks.)
Mobile Ad Recommendations
These are general guidelines for various types of mobile ads.
Mobile Display Ads
As with desktop display ads, follow these recommendations:
-
Do not use pop-up ads.
-
Avoid mobile prestitial ads. (Prestitial ads appear in the middle of scrolling through content.)
-
All mobile display ads should have an explicit Close or Skip button.
In-App Ads
All in-app banners must be compatible with MRAID. For MRAID mobile ads, use this file structure:
-
Metadata file named manifest.json
-
HTML/JS Assets
-
Additional assets: images, video, and so forth (if applicable)
Note
Remove any comments from the final manifest.json file.
Mobile Video Ads
As with desktop video-based ads, follow these recommendations:
-
For a video ad with autoplay, mute the sound by default.
-
Visitors should be able to skip all pre-roll video ads longer than 31 seconds within 6 seconds of ad play.
-
Avoid using large display ads as companion ads for video.
